If you've never booked a personal shopping session before, it's normal to feel a little unsure about what actually happens. Will someone hand you a rack of clothes and tell you what to buy? Do you need to already know your "style"? Is it going to feel like a sales pitch?

Here's what a first session with House of Melinda actually looks like, start to finish.

It starts before we ever hit the racks

Every personal shopping session is built on the consultation that comes before it, plus a short style questionnaire you'll fill out ahead of time. That's intentional. I'm not walking in cold and guessing what you like. I already know your budget, your sizing, the pieces already working in your closet, and the specific gaps we're shopping to fill.

This is also where silhouette guidance happens, what actually fits your body versus what just fits the mannequin, so we're not figuring that out for the first time in a fitting room with a line forming outside.

What we're actually shopping for

Sessions are typically booked in 3-hour blocks, and we go in with a plan, not a vague mission to "find some new clothes." That might mean:

  • Filling specific gaps in a workweek wardrobe
  • Building out pieces for a single event or milestone
  • Refreshing a season that's been quietly not working
  • Mixing timeless staples with a few current trend pieces, if that's your thing

Whatever the goal, we stay anchored to it. It's easy to get distracted by a rack of things that look great on a hanger and terrible on you. Part of my job is keeping us honest about that in real time.

In-store or online, either works

Some people love the in-person experience, trying things on, getting an outside eye immediately, making decisions on the spot. Others prefer shopping online together, especially if timing is tight or certain stores work better for their body and budget. Neither is more "correct." We use whatever gets you dressed well without wasting your time or money.

The honest part

I'll say this clearly, because it matters: I'm not there to just tell you everything looks amazing. If a piece doesn't work, I'll say so, and I'll tell you why, so you start to recognize it yourself next time. That's the difference between a wardrobe that holds up past one good photo and one that quietly gets returned or ignored in three weeks.

What you walk away with

By the end of a session, you should have actual pieces, not just ideas. Depending on how the session goes, you'll also leave with a clearer sense of what to look for on your own the next time you're shopping without me, sizing patterns, fabrics that work for your climate and routine, silhouettes that suit how you actually move through your day.

Coming prepared helps, but it's not required

If you've already got a Pinterest board, screenshots, or a mental list of "the thing I never have," bring it. If you don't, that's fine too. That's what the pre-session questionnaire and consultation are for, we build the plan together either way.

Ready to book your first session?

A first personal shopping session works best once we've had a quick consultation, so we're not starting from zero. If you haven't booked that free 20–30 minute call yet, that's the natural first step. From there, we'll set up your shopping session and go from there.
